Current News – Ever Get Argued Into A Corner?

Article by Todd Royer

Last summer I slipped and fell while I was running in the mountains near my house. I was running along a dirt trail and when I fell, I reached out to catch myself and accidentally shoved my right hand against a rock. I badly dislocated my right pointer finger at the second knuckle. It didn’t hurt as much as it looked dreadful. And I had to go to the emergency room to have the finger popped back into place and x-rayed to make sure there weren’t any other problems.

Now jump ahead several months and I run into a casual friend while I’m walking in town. We got into a far ranging conversation to catch up with each other and, of course, I mention that I had dislocated my finger at the beginning of the summer. I inadvertently mentioned that I went to the ER to have it popped back in place and that the costs were ridiculous. My comments set my friend off on a tirade. He is strongly opposed to the Democratically led health care legislation – oddly, he’s a liberal Democrat. He was so passionate about these issues that I couldn’t get a word in edge wise. I think he assumed I was in agreement with him, which I was on part of what he said but not on most of it.

When I finally got to make my point known, my friend switched into a more detailed description of the legislation, spouting off facts that I wasn’t aware of. I couldn’t argue with him simply because I didn’t have the facts at my fingertips – not even my recently repaired fingertip. I’m pretty well informed about current news, but not about these issues at the level of detail that he was presenting. I felt like I was at a loss for words. Fortunately the conversation wrapped up soon there after.
